Overview of Role:

We are currently looking for an Electrical Engineer who will join our System Engineering & Planning team at our Gainesville, Virginia location. This position will develop scopes of work and design typical transmission, substation, and distribution upgrades. This position will also complete work request tasks, system coordination studies and system capacity studies with some guidance. This position will be responsible for assisting in the preparation of short-range and long-range engineering studies and the appropriate short- and long-range plan documentation.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Completes electrical system studies and makes recommendations based on the results with some guidance. Conducts studies to improve the electrical system with emphasis on the application of new materials, equipment, and system operation with guidance.

  • Assists in the design of electric facilities or substations for new customer line extensions, subdivisions, system improvements, system maintenance and SCADA. Reviews construction work orders to ensure adherence to short range work plans, specifications, NOVEC policies, guidelines, and procedures, and determines over-current and over-voltage protection requirements.

  • Develops short-range and long-range plan projects and programs from system studies, outage investigations and maintenance records.

  • Investigates and analyzes routine permanent and momentary outages to determine the root cause and recommends improvements as necessary. Develops projects to prevent future similar outages.

  • Reviews and recommends protective device coordination, settings and scheme modifications as needed.

  • Manages several projects and/or assignments simultaneously to meet project schedule deadlines.

  • Provides technical support to field personnel during project implementation and system commissioning. Reviews maintenance procedures against manufacturer recommendations, evaluates test reports, and proposes projects as needed to correct deficiencies.

  • Prepares thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations, and sketches related to well defined problems and analyses of increasing scope and complexity.

  • Maintains accurate, detailed records of drawings, calculations, and settings in the appropriate databases.

  • Trains, guides, and mentors lower-level engineers.

  • Provides technical support to System Operations department, if needed.

  • Works continually towards self-development to maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; benchmarking state-of-the-art practices; and participating in professional societies.


Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering is required.

  • Two to five years of related experience and/or training in the planning, design, construction, and operation of utility electric systems is required, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.


Professional Skills and Abilities:

  • A demonstrated fundamental understanding of SCADA and outage management, protection and control, metering, and substation and distribution design.

  • Demonstrated ability to function independently in a multi-task environment, as well as part of a team.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of all company policies and procedures as well as all applicable federal, state, and local laws.

  • Demonstrated proficiency with general computer operation and Microsoft Office applications.

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and efficiently with all levels within the organization.

  • Demonstrated ability to respond to changing business needs by reassessing and communicating the impact on planned and scheduled work projects and then reprioritizing projects.

  • Demonstrated ability to design economical and practical system improvements; and operating and maintenance programs.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of power engineering principles and theories.

  • Demonstrated ability to carry out delegated work with some supervision.
