The opportunity:
We have an exciting opportunity for a Technical Underwriting Specialist – Technology & Cyber to join the Markel team in any of our offices – Leeds, Manchester, Birmingham or London. The individual will work closely with the wider Underwriting leadership team to monitor and manage product profitability and support on complex referrals in accordance with underwriting authorities. The role will support driving growth and support sales in strategic broker opportunities

Our growth will come through existing and new Liability product lines. We continue to invest in our Underwriting team to support our growing portfolio. This involves the creation of some new and exciting product leadership roles, responsible for the build and management of new and existing insurance products. These roles are responsible for the development of a profitable and growing portfolio, working with the Sales, Actuarial and Claims teams.
What you’ll be doing:
Respond quickly to top tier referrals for technology and cyber in accordance with underwriting authorities
Work as part of the underwriting team to help build skills, product knowledge and capability across the underwriting function. Support creation of a smaller group of technical expert underwriters
Ability to drive profitable growth of the SME Technology and Cyber portfolios. Focused on a balance of large volume/low premiums and small volume/moderate premiums
Drive and raise awareness of Technology & Cyber products across broker development and underwriting sales communities within National Markets.
Participate as part of the wider Markel team in market promotion and product launches
Support the sales teams in strategic broker discussions; respond to market tenders and attend client meetings
Monitor and report activities and provide timely and relevant management information
Role model the Markel Style and contribute to product leadership across the business, working with colleagues across Markel International
Our must haves:
A successful personal history of underwriting technology and cyber business over a number of years in the UK retail broker market
A strong technical knowledge of product coverage and market dynamics which can be leveraged or need mitigating
Demonstrable track record in delivering profitable results in these classes, over multiple years
A good understanding of the regulatory obligations for underwriting and distribution of insurance products
Work well as part of a cross functional team delivering new propositions to market along with sales, marketing and actuarial
Strong and proactive communication skills
