The opportunity:
The Claims department seeks to be market-leaders in the provision of an efficient, cost-effective and professional service to our brokers and clients. Our vision is to be the most customer centric, agile and value adding claims team in the market. We strive to be pro-active and flexible in the management of claims whilst maintaining our integrity. The claims team works collaboratively alongside the underwriting function in order to facilitate close communication and exchange of ideas, and is an integral part of the product and customer service delivered to our clients.
The Wholesale Claims team manages both company market and Lloyd’s of London claims from three primary locations (London, Singapore, Melbourne), and emanating from three core divisions; Marine & Energy, PFR & Cyber, and Specialty. The Wholesale division writes in excess of $1.5bn GWP with a goal to grow to over $2bn GWP by the end of 2025. The International Casualty product line is new to Wholesale in 2024 with the build out of a market leading team writing both open market and delegated business. The development of a leading and experienced claims function will be a key criteria to the success of the product line.
What you’ll be doing:
- Lead the International Casualty claims function with a view to building a leading team to drive and support the claims philosophy and overall International Casualty underwriting and claims proposition.
- Manage open market lead primary and excess claims and oversee delegated claims arrangements across all product lines including general liability, environment liability and life sciences (amongst others). Provide support and guidance to all (future) team members in their claims handling and escalation of claims to senior management where appropriate.
- Support the Claims Leadership team and other senior leaders in the development and implementation of the Claims Business Plan and the Wholesale strategy.
- Support the Director of International Casualty and product heads in the underwriting business plan process, identifying and detailing the claims handling capabilities and resourcing requirements needed to support the underwriting plan. Provide technical input into product wordings and class-specific vendor and expert support.
- Produce monthly and quarterly reports identifying key incurred movements and notifications, claims trends and current focus of the team. Present reports, incorporating detailed data analysis, to support the quarterly reserving process with the Underwriting and Actuarial teams.
- Drive efficiencies and high performance within the team, which includes reviewing team priorities, workloads, (future) team structure and processes regularly. Produce, comment upon and check reports are clear and correct regarding monthly KPIs. Escalate any matters to the Head of Claims Performance where necessary.
- Drive team broker interaction to deliver a more customer focused and value adding service; share relevant information with the Claims Leadership team and the broader claims teams.
- Forge great working relationships with all Markel International departments including the rest the Underwriting, Compliance, Actuarial, Finance, HR and Marketing teams.
Our must-haves:
- Have proven leadership capability, or demonstrate the ability to lead a team
- Be an experienced London Market claims practitioner with a deep understanding of the team specific classes of business and a proven ability to manage high-value, complex, international and multi-party claims in these areas.
- Have a proven ability to manage class specific vendors and DCA’s to deliver high quality customer service.
- Have strong relationships with key brokers, demonstrating strong client management skills.
- Have proven people management skills and demonstrate the ability to develop and train team members.
- Have knowledge of the Lloyd’s and Company market.
- Be a competent user of London Market ECF or CLASS, and good IT skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel, Access and Outlook and our in-house systems.
