The opportunity:
The Principal Database Administrator role will provide operational oversight and technical expertise for enterprise SQL and Oracle environments. This role will serve as the lead DBA, a point of contact and escalation resource for operational database issues within the Managed Services Database Team. The Principal DBA will also provide mentorship and direction to support team members and other areas of IT within Markel.
You will work alongside the database architect and database engineers to embrace and deploy technical database solutions in order to achieve operational efficiency and excellence. Enabling management at scale through automation and self-service without compromising stability or security
What you’ll be doing:
- Performs engineering and administrative duties for Microsoft SQL, Oracle DB, Azure Synapse as well as maintains integrations with technologies and other Markel applications.
- Build positive relationships with Markel’s Data Services, Data Backbone, and other data providers within Markel’s application organizations.
- Partners with managed services provider engineers to perform operational support and project activities.
- Monitors incident and service request queue, resolution rates, response times and track against SLAs. Assigns tasks and duties.
- Partners with architecture to evaluate, recommend new software.
- Performs change management using standard tools. Ensures conformance and compliance with existing system standards.
- Maintains an accurate inventory of database servers, patching levels and versions
- Ensures all database systems are recoverable and database retention policies are followed.
- Proactively ensures databases are available, adaptable and perform well through adequate database monitoring and maintenance.
- Works with Global Security Services Compliance team to ensure Organization’s database landscape meets security and governance standards as well as adhering to the hardening policies, all other company policies and audit requirements.
- Feeds back to GSS team on changes to hardening standards
Our must-haves:
- Microsoft or Oracle certification preferred. ITIL Certification or experience working in an ITIL environment preferred. TOGAF is a plus.
- Experience providing database support or development of SQL Server and/or Oracle, working with stakeholders from business, development and infrastructure teams.
- Experience delivering projects of scale and migrating database systems to Microsoft Azure.
- Excellent programming knowledge of T-SQL, PowerShell and exposure to other languages.
- experience with Microsoft SQL, SSRS, SSIS, and SSAS require, any exposure to Oracle RDBMS 11g, 12c, 19c, Oracle RMAN preferred. . Experience with Nutanix Era/NDB a plus
- Stong grasp of relational Database Management System architecture and how it relates to the organization’s application landscape.
- Understanding of backup and restore processes required, knowledge of Dell DDBoost or Veeam a plus
- Experience of business critical systems, and 24/7 support.
- Good communication, creativity, attention to detail, and oral and written communications skills tailored for the intended audience.
- Ability to produce clear and concise documentation, as well as neat and accurate diagrams.
- Proactive worker and mentorship in planning details of procedures and methods to attain definite objectives.
- Understanding sophisticated requirements, translating them and addressing them with an appropriate solution. Understanding the impacts of design compromises, taking costs and licensing limitations into consideration when designing a solution.
