The opportunity:
The Database Engineer role will develop solutions to automate SQL and Oracle database support procedures and processes. This role will receive technical direction from the Database architect within the Database Team, and work alongside the DBAs.
This role will help design and implement database solutions that will allow management at scale of Markel's numerous database systems. Future-proofing Markel's database systems for years to come, allowing efficient administration through automation, lean process design and self-service capabilities. The role will work closely with the DBAs and Application Support teams.
What you’ll be doing:
- Develop, engineers, tests and deploy database infrastructure and administration solutions.
- Work with Application support teams to understand self-service and other support requirements and then work with the architect to build solutions, proof of concept work, prototypes, evaluations as necessary.
- Manages code repository for the DBA team, ensuring that processes are followed and that code is current and backed up. Works with the DBA team and the Principal DBA to agree standardization and processes for migrations, refreshes, clones, backup solutions, encryption, automate patching.
- Build positive relationships with Markel’s Data Services, Data Backbone, and other data providers and data engineers within Markel’s application organizations.
- Performs change management using standard tools. Ensures conformance and compliance with existing system standards.
- Works within database hardening and build standards and policies as well as Identify opportunities for improvement.
- Create Azure templates/images, DSC, PowerShell/Bash/Python scripts to allow faster provisioning of databases, resources and components.
- Creates tooling, utilities and applications to assist the DBAs. Documents new and existing processes and assists with training and hand-over of solutions.
Our must-haves:
- Microsoft or Oracle certification preferred. ITIL Certification or experience working in an ITIL environment preferred. TOGAF is a plus.
- Experience providing database support or development of SQL Server and/or Oracle, working with stakeholders from business, development and infrastructure teams.
- Experience delivering projects of scale and migrating database systems to Microsoft Azure.
- Excellent programming knowledge of T-SQL, PowerShell and exposure to other languages.
- experience with Microsoft SQL, SSRS, SSIS, and SSAS require, any exposure to Oracle RDBMS 11g, 12c, 19c, Oracle RMAN preferred. . Experience with Nutanix Era/NDB a plus
- Strong grasp of relational Database Management System architecture and how it relates to the organization’s application landscape.
- Understanding of backup and restore processes required, knowledge of Dell DDBoost or Veeam a plus
- Experience of business critical systems, and 24/7 support.
- Good communication, creativity, attention to detail, and oral and written communications skills tailored for the intended audience.
- Ability to produce clear and concise documentation, as well as neat and accurate diagrams.
- Proactive worker and mentorship in planning details of procedures and methods to attain definite objectives.
- Understanding sophisticated requirements, translating them and addressing them with an appropriate solution. Understanding the impacts of design compromises, taking costs and licensing limitations into consideration when designing a solution.
