The opportunity:

The Database Administrator role will provide operational and technical database expertise for enterprise SQL and Oracle environments. This sits within the Managed Services Database Team. The DBA will work closely with other team members to ensure operational availability, recoverability, performance, integrity and security of the databases.

The role will work collaboratively with support teams and other areas of IT. This role will be supported by the members of a knowledgeable and expert team, but it is encouraged that the role will learn and adapt to new database technologies and Azure products, as they are introduced to Markel. Training will be given where required

What you’ll be doing:

  • Perform engineering and administrative duties for Microsoft SQL, Oracle DB, Azure Synapse as well as maintains integrations with technologies and other Markel applications.
  • Build positive relationships with Markel’s Data Services, Data Backbone, and other data providers within Markel’s application organizations.
  • Partner with managed services provider engineers to perform operational support and project activities.
  • Performs change management using standard tools. Ensures conformance and compliance with existing system standards. Measures performance to ensure accurate operation.
  • Performs patching and upgrades and database migrations, test database refreshes.
  • Works with Global Security Services Compliance team to ensure Organization’s database landscape meets security and governance standards as well as adhering to the hardening policies, backup retention policies, all other company policies and audit requirements.
  • Feeds back to the team or manager any concerns or issues.

Our must-haves:

  • Microsoft or Oracle certification preferred. ITIL Certification or experience working in an ITIL environment preferred. TOGAF is a plus.
  • Experience providing database support or development of SQL Server and/or Oracle, working with stakeholders from business, development and infrastructure teams.
  • Experience delivering projects of scale and migrating database systems to Microsoft Azure.
  • Excellent programming knowledge of T-SQL, PowerShell and exposure to other languages.
  • experience with Microsoft SQL, SSRS, SSIS, and SSAS require, any exposure to Oracle RDBMS 11g, 12c, 19c, Oracle RMAN preferred. . Experience with Nutanix Era/NDB a plus
  • Stong grasp of relational Database Management System architecture and how it relates to the organization’s application landscape.
  • Understanding of backup and restore processes required, knowledge of Dell DDBoost or Veeam a plus
  • Experience of business critical systems, and 24/7 support.
  • Good communication, creativity, attention to detail, and oral and written communications skills tailored for the intended audience.
  • Ability to produce clear and concise documentation, as well as neat and accurate diagrams.
  • Proactive worker and mentorship in planning details of procedures and methods to attain definite objectives.
  • Understanding sophisticated requirements, translating them and addressing them with an appropriate solution. Understanding the impacts of design compromises, taking costs and licensing limitations into consideration when designing a solution.
