The opportunity:
The Database Architect role will provide architectural oversight and technical expertise for enterprise SQL and Oracle environments. This role will provide technical direction for DBAs and Engineers within the Managed Services Database Team.
The Database Architect will work closely with other architects within Markel, to ensure that the Database solutions meet requirements.
This role will design and outline implementation of database solutions that will allow management at scale of Markel's numerous database systems. Future-proofing Markel's database systems for years to come, allowing efficient administration through automation, lean process design and self-service capabilities. The role will work closely with the database engineers on projects, as well as the operational DBAs.
What you’ll be doing:
- Designs, documents, engineers and sees through to implementation, database infrastructure solutions.
- Works with Application support teams to gather self-service requirements and then design processes to automate and improve current requests, working through the designs with the database engineers through to implementation.
- Find opportunities for improvement, assist the Database Services Manager with cases to provide team members with the information needed.
- Build positive relationships with Markel’s Data Services, Data Backbone, and other data providers within Markel’s application organizations.
- Partners with database engineers to understand operational procedures and identify and remediate bottlenecks the processes.
- Standardise processes for migrations, refreshes, clones, backup solutions, encryption, automate patching.
- Partners with architecture to evaluate, recommend and select new software.
- Performs change management using standard tools. Ensures conformance and compliance with existing system standards.
- Work with the database engineers to create Azure templates and images to allow faster provisioning of databases.
Proactively ensures databases are available, responsive and perform well through adequate database monitoring and maintenance.
Our must-haves:
- Microsoft or Oracle certification preferred.
- ITIL Certification or experience working in an ITIL environment preferred. TOGAF is a plus.
- Experience delivering projects of scale and migrating database systems to Microsoft Azure.
- experience with Microsoft SQL, SSRS, SSIS, and SSAS require, any exposure to Oracle RDBMS 11g, 12c, 19c, Oracle RMAN preferred. . Experience with Nutanix Era/NDB a plus
- Understanding of Relational Database Management System architecture and how it relates to the organization’s application landscape.
- Understanding of backup and restore processes required, knowledge of Dell DDBoost or Veeam a plus
- Participate in after-hours critical production support if required
