The Southeast Territory Underwriter of Cyber, E&O will review, analyze, accept, and sometimes declining complex risks to ensure profitability for Markel.
The primary purpose of this position is to underwrite new business and renewals in a profitable manner and according to authority level and established guidelines, and drive projects having an impact on the business. Assigned larger, more important and more complex accounts. Use underwriting tools to determine accurate classifications, rates, and premium charges. Understand state laws, including cancellation and non-renewal, within assigned territory to properly transact business within each state. Knowledgeable in coverage forms and policy language; appropriate utilization of forms and exclusions. Assist with resolving premium audit disputes within assigned agents/brokers. Promotes the growth and development of less experienced underwriters and fosters teamwork. Help lead our underwriting team across retail and wholesale channels, grow existing relationships with a focus on retail and large wholesalers within the Southeast region profitably. Find opportunities for profitable growth and help younger underwriters on the team, communicate opportunities and needs to management.
Responsibilities
- Review, analyze, accept, and decline wholesale and retail Cyber/IT & Misc E&O risks to ensure profitability for Markel.
- Underwrite and select new business that will produce an underwriting profit.
- Manage the existing renewal book and implement corrective measures, as needed, to meet profitability expectations.
- Communicate with regional managers and national Cyber/IT & Misc E&O product line leaders on individual accounts, current and proposed producers, and make recommendations concerning operations, systems and procedures when appropriate.
- Participate in audits and/or underwriting meetings as required.
- Build and maintain quality relationships with key producers while simultaneously monitoring the entire appointed producer base for profitability and production.
- Review forms and pricing of competitors and be able to effectively market the Markel product within the competitive landscape
- Provide training or technical assistance to department underwriting support staff.
Skills & Experience
- Minimum 5 years current complex underwriting expertise preferred;
- Experience in the Southeast Territory of the United States preferred;
- Demonstrated technical knowledge and skills reflective of progression of positions of increasing responsibility;
- Proven experience in the wholesale and retail channels;
- Demonstrated marketing and relationship building skills;
- Four-year college degree and/or CPCU or similar designation preferred;
- Excellent oral and written communication skills;
- Strong analytical and organizational skills;
- Must be a team player that enjoys a flexible and spontaneous business environment;
- Must live in the Southeast Coast of the US and be over 1 hour from a Markel office to be considered for a remote opportunity;
- Ability to travel up to 25%.

Pay information:
The base salary offered for the successful candidate will be based on compensable factors such as job-relevant education, job-relevant experience, training, licensure, demonstrated competencies, geographic location, and other factors. The base salary range for the Sr. Underwriter position is $84-114k/year with a 40% bonus potential. The base salary range for the Executive Underwriter position is $125-160k/year with a 45% bonus potential.
