Nuclear Island - Area Technical Manager


Aztec West, Bristol. Hybrid, minimum of 3 days per week in the office. Regular travel to Bristol, Gloucester and Bridgwater required.

The Opportunity…


We are looking for a technical leader to join the Hinkley Point C (HPC) project with a particular focus on leadership of Structural Integrity (SI) related topics.


As a Nuclear Island (NI) Area Technical Manager, you will establish strategic technical leadership of high-profile topics across the NI Area of HPC, focusing on best for project outcomes to include decision making focused on Safety, Quality, Time and Cost.


You will be involved in a highly diverse array of complex technical topics but will have a particular focus on strategic and delivery leadership of the Structural Integrity discipline for HPC, driving our programme for structural integrity claims and high integrity components.


In your role, you will report to the NI Area Engineering Senior Manager and be a senior leader with accountability for delivery of some of our most complex and impactful technical topics.

What you’ll be doing…

 

  • Working with the NI Area Engineering senior manager, NI Area engineering managers and other stakeholders to identify, triage and put in place resolution plans for high-risk technical topics.
  • Working with the SI Chief Engineer and SI Safety Case Officer to define and maintain the overall SI strategy for HPC.
  • Steering the delivery of the SI topics, setting and maintaining the project expectations.
  • Performing reporting of Structural Integrity (SI) topics such as High Integrity Components (HIC) and other components with SI claims to the HPC senior stakeholders.
  • Ensuring appropriate means are available to resolve cross-functional technical issues, achieving a best-for-project solution with a schedule-conscious approach.
  • Working with the programmes and the technical teams on prioritisation and emerging scope topics, maximising the efficiency and value of delivery.
  • Performing global risk management - understanding risks and keeping up to date risk tracking. Actively managing technical risk across all HPCs programmes with a particular focus on the delivery of structural integrity topics.
  • Advocating for pragmatic decision making which respects the overall aims of the project and ensures technical integrity. This will involve producing and driving mitigation plans for risks and issues.
  • Providing operational leadership to the SI discipline for HPC, managing and coordinating the output of the workstream leads and ensuring the teams working on SI topics have sufficient focus and prioritisation.
  • Coordinating the different workstreams leads in the varying disciplines contributing to SI.


Who you are…


Your background may include some of the following:

 

  • A relevant degree in engineering or science. If relevant, you should have achieved or be working towards chartership in that discipline.
  • Broad experience in the nuclear industry including knowledge of nuclear safety cases and the regulatory environment.
  • Strong Experience of engineering across different disciplines (e.g. structural integrity, fault studies, hazards, safety case, inspection). Expert level knowledge is not expected in these areas; however, you will be expected to interact with experts regularly.
  • Ability to lead complex technical/commercial topics with multiple stakeholders, managing multi-million-pound budgets with a strong technical focus.
  • Experience across the project lifecycle for a complex EPC project which should include design, manufacture, construction/installation, commissioning and preferably also operations.
  • Strong focus on delivery.
  • Experience communicating at director/board level within major projects/organisations and within a multi-cultural environment.
