Reporting to the Manager Healthy Communities, the Healthy Built Environment Coordinator (HBEC) will work collaboratively with team members, community partners planners, and engineers to identify strategic areas of action, and accelerate integration of health considerations into land use, transportation and various healthy built environment policies. This includes supporting transportation networks, community access and affordability to healthy food, protecting the natural environment, enhancing neighborhood design and affordable/safe housing. This position will focus on assessment, and evaluation of public health’s transportation pilot and work towards strategic planning and advocacy to increase equitable access to transportation in rural communities. Much of this work will align with principles of smart growth, Transportation Demand Management and Transit-Oriented Development. This position will also bring a focus on reducing health inequities related to access to transportation and the built environment. As a member of the Healthy Communities team, the Healthy Built Environment Coordinator will contribute to an understanding of the health impacts of built environments, the opportunities for improvement and collaboration with community partners to promote community designs that facilitate active transportation and integration of physical activity in daily life.
The HBEC will support Public Health Services in adapting, implementing, evaluating and further disseminating the tools and promising practices that have been developed in other jurisdictions. They will foster meaningful engagement and collaboration with local community planners, engineers, NGOs, and other community partners the development, implementation and evaluation of tools and interventions.
