EY Life Actuarial is hiring! Join our award-winning actuarial team and work with some of the strongest actuarial practitioners on a range of exciting client projects. Our client base is diverse. We work in the insurance sector with traditional insurers and reinsurers both in the UK and globally, with the Life Actuarial practice being a core component of our insurance sector service offering. More broadly we support clients such as asset managers, hedge funds, industry bodies and start-ups, to name a few, who interact with insurers or insurance business.

Our UK team is one of the largest of EY’s actuarial practices globally, regularly supporting both other actuarial teams in different locations as well as other service lines in the UK.  The size of the practice and range of projects available gives our team members a diverse and challenging environment to continually develop and learn.

The opportunity

The UK Life Actuarial Technology team is looking for a Senior Manager building their career in the Technology and Modelling space to join our team. You will be joining a growing, successful and innovative team who design and develop technology solutions for our Actuarial clients. You will also work with our local leadership team to build out our strategy as we look to grow our capabilities and client offerings.

The Technology sub-team within our Life Actuarial team can work on a broad range of projects, but the typical activities include:

  • Understand a client’s existing issue and designing a solution to meet their needs
  • Analysing an existing process and advising on ways in which it can be improved and/or automated
  • Developing new functionality in either existing vendor solutions, or in bespoke open source solutions to meet a clients’ needs.  We are solution-agnostic, focussed on what will work best for the client situation.
  • Developing prototypes in new technologies and supporting clients in writing the business case for deployment
  • Applying machine learning and advanced analytics applications to a range of Life Insurance applications.
  • Leading innovative thinking on the use of cloud computing, open source, and new vendors for the Life Insurance market.
  • Contributing towards broader initiatives that support our Actuarial team including building and deploying models for climate risk.

 

This client activity is supplemented by our continual desire to build out our proposition and grow our business. As part of this we want to:

  • Be the market leader for Actuarial Technology consulting services
  • Be responsive and successful to emerging market needs and requests, proactively building our presence and reputation in the market,
  • Explore new technologies and new ideas that will present opportunities in the future e.g. AI and ML.
  • Build our offshore capability and commercial model
  • Pilot a managed service proposition with a client
  • Host client forums and raise our point of views to the market.

 

Your key responsibilities

  • You will maintain and develop relevant market connections in support of business development activities, identifying and developing opportunities
  • You will make significant contributions to shaping client proposals and negotiating follow on phases
  • You will lead the delivery of our key technology projects for our clients, advising clients on an appropriate solution, creating the technical design, and leading a team of developers through to deployment
  • You will create innovative solutions and evolve these into commercial opportunities for our clients.
  • Working closely with colleagues, you will create a positive learning culture and coach and counsel junior team members and help build EY breadth and depth of capabilities in this space.
  • You will be working closely with offshore development teams to build their capabilities, working with them to establish frameworks and standards which the offshore teams must adhere to when working on our projects.
  • You will be expected to manage your time and be responsible for delivering to both clients and internal stakeholders, develop yourself and stay up to date with market developments

 

Skills and attributes for success

  • Qualified Actuary with strong technical, computer science, and/or data science skills
  • Able to work independently and autonomously in a complex environment
  • While an actuarial background is important, you will be expected to work with multi-disciplinary technology, finance and actuarial teams to deliver large-scale transformation programmes that touch all facets of a client’s business
  • Commitment to chosen initiatives and assigned projects
  • Strong communication and project management skills
  • Experience of designing, building and deploying Actuarial technology solutions, with practical experience and working knowledge of the common Actuarial vendor solutions and open source coding languages such as Python and R.
  • Have practical knowledge and experience, or an enthusiasm to learn, of microservices, and cloud computing.
  • Have agile project management experience including a working knowledge of product development software such as Azure DevOps and Jira.
  • Have a passion for coaching and developing junior members of our team.

 

To qualify for the role you must have

  • A successful track record in Life insurance, gained through working for a provider directly or a top tier consultancy or a specialist financial services consultancy
  • A degree and Fellowship in the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (FIA) or other internationally recognised professional actuarial association
  • Experience managing a team and running a range of projects, including being responsible for the project management
