Location: Bristol, UK
Reporting To: Laurence Martin
Compensation: £55,000 - £65,000 / year
Description
Ready to solve problems that matter? Rowden Technologies is an ambitious, fast-growing technology company based in Bristol. We exist to ensure that those who make the world a safer place benefit from the best in technological innovation. We design and integrate systems, and research and develop technologies that enable the armed forces, security agencies and first responders to do their jobs more effectively. To support our continued growth, we need the support of additional Systems Engineers to help us deliver these plans. In the role of Senior Systems Engineer, you will provide a key role in the delivery of our digital systems, ensuring that we provide outstanding and innovative user-focused solutions that address critical operational requirements. You’ll be responsible for supporting systems engineering activities across the project lifecycle, from requirements engineering and system design and architecture, to integration, verification, and validation. You will collaborate with project managers, product owners and the wider engineering team to help bring clarity from ambiguity and realise successful systems.
This generalist role requires both strong technical and personal skills. We’re looking for Systems Engineers who are keen to do learn and apply systems engineering techniques and who are passionate about delivering real benefit to users rather than reams of documentation and diagrams.
If you’re ready to help us challenge the status quo in government tech provision and want to work on diverse work that really matters, we’d like to hear from you.
Key areas of responsibility
As Rowden’s Senior Systems Engineer you will be responsible for:
- Leading the translation of the user need into technical guidance and specifications at multiple levels, adopting appropriate systems engineering methodologies.
- Providing technical domain expertise and systematic approaches to the identification and down-selection of system architectures and components.
- Developing system delivery, integration, test and verification strategies.
- Working with support of project managers, planning, managing, and delivering a range of engineering work packages using appropriate tools (e.g. JIRA).
- Managing interfaces and relationships between internal and external teams.
- Maintaining appropriate design documentation utilising Model-Based systems engineering tools and methods (e.g. Enterprise Architect, SysML).
- Supporting the refinement of the Rowden engineering design processes to support efficient robust and effective design, delivery, and support of systems.
- Developing junior engineers and raising awareness of systems engineering best practice within the wider company.
Key skills, experience and behaviours
We are looking for someone who is passionate about technology and who actively invests in their technical skills and abilities. You’ll gain loads of experience in this role but before you do, you should have:
- A degree or equivalent in Engineering, Computer Science, or related field.
- A Systems Thinking mindset. Able to adopt a systems approach to problem-solving rather than jumping to a known solution and able to define robust systems architectures (e.g. modular, scalable, flexible).
- Experienced in developing quality specifications that adhere to the principles of good requirement characteristics.
- An understanding of the Systems Lifecycle and experience of working at multiple levels / phases within this and different lifecycle models (Agile, waterfall, incremental and compounds thereof etc.), their strengths and weaknesses.
- Familiarity with Systems Engineering tools and approaches (e.g. requirements management tools, test management tools, MBSE tools)
- The ability to deliver and critically review technical documentation, reports and presentations and the knowledge and experience to ensure work meets contractual, safety and environmental obligations, with an understanding of relevant engineering standards, including safety and environmental regulations.
- Strong communication skills to effectively collaborate with, and influence, both technical and non-technical internal and external stakeholders.
About you: The ideal candidate will have a strong balance of technical skills and experience, and the behavioural competencies that we believe are key to success in the role are as follows:
- A user-centric mindset: drive to understand and address end users' real needs.
- An agile approach: able to navigate a fast-paced environment and deliver results.
- Pragmatic perspective: grounded in practicality with exemplary critical thinking skills, ensuring our solutions make a tangible impact.
- Attention to detail: commitment to ensuring the highest quality standards in all deliverables.
- Radical honesty: valuing open and transparent communication above all.
- Being hands-on: willingness to dive into the details and lead by example to solve technical problems.
- Highly collaborative: actively engaging with others, sharing ideas, and working together towards common goals.
You will be required to hold or obtain a UK Security Clearance. We would also like you to commit to working on site at our Bristol HQ on a regular basis. Most likely at least 3 days per week.
