Directs the nursing operations of specific clinical or geographic division(s); is accountable for divisional human resource management, effective utilization of services, initiation and maintenance of quality standards and program development. Participates as a team member in formulation of hospital and patient care services policies and procedures and in developing budgets.
1. Hires, evaluates and develops Nurse Managers, supervisors and other staff. Sets performance standards, provides guidance, identifies learning needs, selects appropriate learning experiences and delegates responsibility.
2. Plans, develops, implements and evaluates goals and objectives for area of responsibility within the framework of the Department of Patient Care Services.
3. Ensures that area of responsibility meets regulatory agency, professional, hospital and department standards. Develops and/or implements a system whereby the quality and effectiveness of care is defined, monitored, maintained and/or improved. Participates in hospital, quality improvement programs.
4. Oversees and recommends the formulation of clinical procedures and standards specific to the clinical division(s).
5. Collaborates with administration, department heads and medical staff to plan, problem-solve, implement and evaluate programs and decisions which affect the delivery of patient care
6. Identifies problems and executes resolutions.
7. Makes recommendations to the Sr. Vice President, Patient Care Services regarding departmental policies, practice issues and contractual agreements.
8. Participates in Service line activity for the health system
9. Participates as a team member in planning new services and in formulating hospital and patient care services policies. Leads in intra and inter departmental committees and meetings.
10. Fosters a professional practice environment through the encouragement and facilitation of collegial interdisciplinary relationships, peer review, nursing research, innovative concepts of nursing practice, and joint practice arrangements through affiliating universities. Acts as a preceptor for graduate students.
11. Fosters positive labor relations in area of responsibility. Hears and adjusts grievances at second level. Approves suspensions and terminations of employees.
12. Communicates appropriate information to subordinates and keeps peers and superiors apprised of needs and current developments. Demonstrates organization in written and oral communication.
13. Prepares staffing proposals and makes recommendations relating to existing personnel budgets. Determines utilization of allocated budget for area within budgetary constraints. Operates division(s) within acceptable budget variance according to departmental guidelines. Implements monitoring systems and practices to insure continued operating efficiency.
14. Operationalizes patient classification system that provides valid data.
15. Participates in the development and monitoring of the supply expenses and capital budget of the division.
16. Assumes first line hospital administrative staffing and coverage on a rotational basis.
17. Assumes relief coverage Patient Care Services as assigned.
18. Participates in the department’s performance improvement activities.
19. Maintains patient/employee confidentiality in the management of information.
20. Maintains open communications with EMS and other pre-hospital agencies.
21. Serves as Liaison between Emergency Department and in-patient units.
Compensation Statement
The Mount Sinai Health System (MSHS) provides a salary range to comply with the New York City Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for this role is $139,748.00 - $209,622.00 Annually. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, education, and hospital need. The salary range or contractual rate listed does not include bonuses/incentives, differential pay or other forms of compensation or benefits.
