Job Descrption

Position Title: Postdoctoral Fellowship in Environmental Health & Pediatric Exposomics

Location: New York, NY

Employment Type: Full Time

Description: The Department of Environmental Medicine and Public Health at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai supports a rapidly growing postdoctoral fellowship program which has doubled in faculty size within the past seven years, while catapulting from the #27 ranked program in Environmental Health NIH funding in 2012 to #2 (based on NIH report data) today.

Faculty: Our faculty have diverse interests including (but not limited to) exposure science, novel tooth biomarkers, exposomic untargeted assays, spatial statistics, Environmental Pediatrics, Oral Health, Respiratory health, Community Based Participatory Research, neurobehavior, Neuroimaging, and environmental statistics. Social determinants of health, health equity and environmental justice are areas of particular interest. EMR data mining and wearables is a new area, as we have strong ties to our Institutional Clinical Translational Science Award (CTSA) including a new Exposomics Core, the only one of its kind in the NIH CTSA program.

Research: Our program hosts an NIEHS P30 Core Center, 2 NIH Human Health Exposure Analysis Resource (HHEAR) Lab Hubs and the HHEAR data center. We are home to two Environmental Influences on Child Health Outcomes (ECHO) grants, the World Trade Center Responders Cohort, a vibrant geospatial analysis program and strong ties to the Department of Pediatrics.

Several international cohorts are based at Mount Sinai as well, and our faculty collaborate with researchers across the U.S. and internationally on studies involving cancer, uterine fibroma, lung growth, autism, ALS, and in clinical trials.

Participants: Our grant-writing program has led to 18 successful NIH K awards among program participants in the past 10 years, including 14 K99 awards, 2 K25s, and 2 K23s. Graduates of our program now work as faculty at U Chicago, U Illinois-Chicago, U Cincinnati, Hofstra, U Pittsburgh, Penn State, U Minnesota, Florida State, NYU, Yale, Columbia, and Mount Sinai, among other institutions. Others hold positions in government (e.g. CDC, NY Health Dept.), foundations (e.g. Health Effects Institute), and industry (e.g. Tempus Inc., Estee Lauder, Google).

Duties:

● You will work and train with a dedicated team of environmental epidemiologists, exposure scientists, biostatisticians, pediatricians, chemists, and toxicologists to support ongoing investigations involving clinical studies, exposure science, studies using large administrative datasets (e.g. Medicare, state health data) and ongoing longitudinal cohort studies based at Mount Sinai. Opportunities to develop new studies involving exposomic approaches to environmental factors (chemical, physical, nutritional and social) in children, adolescents and adults are available. Primary duties may include building programming skills, laboratory skills, study design skills, data collection, data analysis, and manuscript preparation.

● You will advance translational children’s environmental health research including CEH risk communication, counseling, outreach and education, training, quality and process improvement efforts, evaluation and scholarly productivity. Collaborate with leading experts in the fields of environmental health, environmental pediatrics, toxicology, epidemiology, risk assessment and risk communication, and community engagement on important current and emerging environmental health issues. This includes: ○ Gaining expertise in risk assessment and risk communication and provide sound, evidence-based counseling about how to prevent and reduce environmental exposures to families and communities.

○ Participating in work on population-based environmental health interventions.

○ Participating in educational activities to expand knowledge in environmental public health.

○ Providing mentorship to trainees (students, residents) participating in elective programs.

○ Collaborating with community organizations and promote initiatives to improve the health of all NYS children

Other activities include attending and presenting your research at workshops, seminars, and conferences and learning grant writing skills. Support for attending data science workshops is provided. This position may include opportunities for domestic and international travel.

Qualifications: Training and research opportunities are available in epidemiology, data science, biostatistics, environmental health, exposure science, and/or child health research. Individuals should be highly motivated to studying environmental health, including learning new methodologies in Climate and Health, exposure science, complex mixtures data analysis, and exposomics, as applied to studies of human health and development. Lab-based research fellowships in exposomics, exposure biomarkers and epigenetics are also available.
