SUPERVISOR: Safety and Training Specialist

JOB SUMMARY:  Contribute to the overall success of the Transportation Safety and Training Department, including but not limited to bus driver and bus assistant training, federal and state compliance, and other administrative tasks. Provide initial Special Needs training, testing, and certifications. Assist with ensuring compliance with Department of Transportation (DOT) and Colorado Department of Education (CDE) requirements. Assist with classroom and on-the-job training. Complete and maintain safety and training records and performance evaluations. 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESThe following tasks describe the basic functions of the job and represent the type of work performed. They do not constitute an exhaustive list of the duties and responsibilities performed on the job. The following frequencies and percentage of time spent are approximations only and are subject to flexibility dependent on organizational needs. 

• Develop, coordinate, and conduct classroom and on-the-road evaluations to include specialized equipment, wheelchairs, and employee interaction with students. [Daily, 30%]
• Conduct post-training feedback/evaluations. [Daily, 30%]
• Provide guidance to Bus Drivers, Bus Assistants, and other transportation employees with regards to safety aspects and standards operational duties, including but not limited to training and evaluation of drivers, assistants, mechanics, and other employees. [Daily, 10%]
• Evaluate evacuation drills, student safety programs, and student management training. Assist with maintaining federal and state compliance for those programs. [Daily, 10%]
• Create and maintain electronic training records that are required by federal and state programs. [Daily, 5%]
• Participate in coordinating “Buster the Bus” school bus safety program. [Monthly, 5%]
• Provide route coverage as required. [Monthly, 5%]
• Perform other related duties as assigned or requested. [Daily, 5%] 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: The minimum amounts of formal education, professional work experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities that must be met for a candidate to be considered for a position.

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Must meet the insurability requirements of the Colorado School District Self Insurance Pool.
• Must complete special needs training and testing.
• Basic knowledge of typical office equipment such as telephones, copiers, fax machines, email, etc.
• Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office.
• Basic knowledge of common computer applications.
• Basic knowledge of industrial and personnel safety standards and concepts.
• Basic knowledge of DOT, FMCSA, CDE, and CDL compliance.
• Intermediate organizational skills.
• Intermediate verbal and written communication skills.
• Intermediate interpersonal relations and teamwork skills.
• Ability to use handheld two-way radios.
• Ability to effectively train employees and facilitate training sessions.
• Ability to provide guidance and problem-solving assistance to employees.
• Ability to work with special needs and general education students.
• Ability to adapt to adult learning styles and provide possible resolutions.
• Ability to recognize the importance of safety in the workplace, follow safety rules, practice safe work habits, utilize appropriate safety equipment, and report unsafe conditions to the appropriate administrator.
• Criminal background check and fingerprinting required for hire. 

MINIMUM CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES: The minimum certifications and licenses that must be met, valid, and unexpired for a candidate to be considered for a position.

• Colorado Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
• CPR and First Aid certification within 90 days of hire.
• Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) certification within 90 days of hire.
• Certified in Special Needs Transportation (CSNT) certification or equivalent certification within 90 days of hire. 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Any job-related formal education, professional work experience, knowledge, skills, abilities, certifications, licenses, and other criteria that are inessential and in addition to the minimum qualifications, certifications, and licenses.

• Training experience
• Experience working with school age children.
• Experience working with or in a special education environment.
• Intermediate knowledge of DOT, FMCSA, CDE, and CDL compliance.

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL DEMANDS: The physical exertion, cognitive capacities, and work environments required to perform a position’s duties and responsibilities.

• Ability to be flexible with work hours and locations.
• Extremely heavy physical effort (lifting over 50 pounds).
• Frequent bending, reaching, squatting, and climbing.
• Occasional lifting, pulling, and pushing.
• Prolonged standing and walking.
• Visual concentration.
• Eye/hand coordination.
• Overhead work.
• Normal school bus environment.
• Work within a moving vehicle for up to four hours.
• Work in any existing weather conditions.
• Work requires maneuvering heavy wheelchairs (manual and electric) that total weight up to 800 pounds – student/chair combined up ramps, over curbs, and around the inside of a bus.
