SUMMARY:
Under the direction of a licensed registered school nurse (RN), directly assist in meeting the health needs of students. Assist in clinic triage and record keeping. Administer first aid for acute conditions and assist the nurse in managing students with chronic health conditions including asthma, diabetes, and seizure disorders. Provide support and perform nurse-delegated tasks, including nursing procedures such as medication administration, insulin administration, catheterization, and g-tube feedings and flushes, in accordance with state laws and district protocol and procedures. Assist with the maintenance of health records, referrals, and reports, including state-mandated immunization reporting.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Assist the school nurse in triage, first aid/urgent care of students, and in routine interventions for ill and injured students in the health clinic in accordance with state regulations, scope of practice, district training, and emergency care guidelines, including providing technical physical care for students with medical needs such as medication administration, diabetes medication administration, care of gastrostomy tubes, catheterization, etc. [Daily, 40%]
• Help the school nurse in maintaining all health records, physical and electronic, for students, including log of daily health clinic visits. Update and record information in PowerSchool for each student as directed by the school nurse. Assist in parent and staff communications via phone and email. [Daily, 25%]
• Assist the school nurse with student needs, including appropriate health screenings and in providing coverage for the health clinic. [Daily, 15%]
• Perform basic clerical duties such as data entry and retrieval, alphabetizing and filing, duplicating, laminating, taking inventory and ordering supplies, placing phone calls, and light bookkeeping. [Daily, 10%]
• Maintain a clean, hygienic, and orderly work environment and maintain standard precautions, hand hygiene, and respiratory etiquette. [Daily, 5%]
• Contribute to the maintenance all student immunization files and ensure all students have an age or grade appropriate Certificate of Immunization or Certificate of Exemption (or other documentation required by current state statute). Prepare needed immunization plans and track students who are in the process of becoming up-to-date with immunizations. Work with the statewide immunization database and with families to help students become compliant. [Monthly, 10%]
• In consult with or in absence of the school nurse, contact 911 in case of major illness or serious injury. Contact parent/guardian or emergency contact for ill or injured students according to state laws and District protocol and guidelines. [Monthly, 5%]
• Perform other related duties as assigned or requested. [Daily, 5%]
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Basic knowledge of typical office equipment such as telephones, copiers, computers, fax machines, email, etc.
• Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office, specifically Excel.
• Basic knowledge of health clinic equipment that provide objective assessments.
• Intermediate oral and written communication skills.
• Advanced interpersonal relations skills, including professional telephone and email communication.
• Advanced organizational skills.
• Ability to diffuse and manage stressful situations.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality in all aspects of the job in accordance with FERPA and HIPAA.
• Ability and willingness to have medical contact with and provide physical care for students.
• Ability and willingness to provide basic custodial services in health clinic.
REQUIRED CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, AND REGISTRATIONS:
• Criminal background check and fingerprinting required for hire.
• CPR/First Aid certification required within the first 30 days of employment.
• Medication administration training required within the first 30 days of employment.
• State immunization database training required within first 30 days of employment.
• Training on delegated nursing procedures required within the first 30 days of employment.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• Associate’s degree.
• Experience working in a school district or educational setting.
• Experience working in a special education environment.
• Experience working with students, including students with autism, behavior challenges, medically complex conditions, hearing or vision loss, or intellectual disabilities.
• CPR/First Aid certification.
• QMAP/medication administration qualified.
• Intermediate knowledge of medical terminology.
• Bilingual.
