SUMMARY: Works with the school's administration, the district director of Language Supports and Services and the district English language support (ELS) team to promote the district's ELS vision: To provide culturally and linguistically diverse learners with equitable access to cohesive learning opportunities that accelerate their social and academic English, provide meaningful access to grade level content, and increase their overall achievement through collaboration and co-teaching. Plans and provides explicit English instruction for students who are both new to the United States and to the English language.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Duties and assignments may vary based on building assignment, academic year, and school needs. The following frequencies and percentages of time spent are approximations only.
- Provide explicit English language instruction that will support newcomer multilingual learners (specifically Afghan refugees who are at the entering and/or emerging stages of English language proficiency) in communicating information, ideas and concepts for academic success in the content areas of social and instructional language, the language of language arts, the language of mathematics, the language of science and the language of social studies.
- Assess and monitor progress in language development for newcomer Afghan multilingual learners and other newcomers who may attend the class.
- Serve as an advocate for Afghan multilingual learners and their families.
- Ensure newcomer Afghan multilingual learners receive explicit English language instruction appropriate for their level of English proficiency using a functional language approach connecting to and setting them up for success in their content classes.
- Model, support and promote rigorous instruction and high expectations for newcomer Afghan multilingual learners.
- Connect and collaborate with administrators, families and students.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Must hold a current Colorado teaching license with an endorsement in CLD – Culturally and Linguistically Diverse.
2. Knowledge, experience, training and willingness to foster and promote sheltered instruction and explicit language development in mainstream classrooms throughout the school.
4. Familiarity and working knowledge and application of both the Colorado English Language Proficiency (CELP- also known as WIDA standards) and Colorado Academic Standards (CAS).
5. Prefer experience, skills and ability in program development and coordination, organizational leadership, team-building and problem solving.
6. Experience working with multilingual learners from various language backgrounds.
7. Experience as an elementary mainstream/classroom teacher preferred.
8. Experience with co-teaching and/or sharing equal responsibility for planning, instructing, and assessing students preferred.
9. Experience using various approaches to co-teaching based on student needs preferred.
Course Descriptions
Newcomer I
This class is intended for multilingual learners (MLs) who are new (within a year) to the United States and who are at the Entering (level 1) or Emerging (level 2) stages of English language proficiency based on WIDA Screener and a supporting body-of-evidence. This class provides explicit English language instruction that will support MLs in communicating information, ideas, and concepts for academic success in the content areas of social & instructional language, the language of language arts, the language of mathematics, the language of science, and the language of social studies.
Newcomer II
This class is intended for multilingual learners (MLs) who are new (within a year) to the United States and who are at the Entering (level 1) or Emerging (level 2) stages of English language proficiency based on WIDA Screener and a supporting body-of-evidence and demonstrate that an additional semester will support them to move out of the Entering/Emerging stages. This class provides explicit English language instruction that will support MLs in communicating information, ideas, and concepts for academic success in the content areas of social & instructional language, the language of language arts, the language of mathematics, the language of science, and the language of social studies.
