JOB SUMMARY: Supports and serves as one of the primary contacts between students and families who are unhoused and in transition, school staff, district personnel, shelter workers, and other service providers. The McKinney-Vento Student Supports Specialist provides direct support to ensure enrollment of children and youth and facilitate the equitable opportunity to engage in school.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The following tasks describe the basic functions of the job and represent the type of work performed. They do not constitute an exhaustive list of the duties and responsibilities performed on the job. The following frequencies and percentage of time spent are approximations only and are subject to flexibility dependent on organizational needs.
Identify students who qualify under the McKenney-Vento Act. [15%]
Provide and administer all McKinney-Vento services for which students are eligible for an assigned region of schools. [15%]
Coordinate with CCSD Transportation to ensure students receive timely transportation services. [10%]
Facilitate parents/guardians and youth in accessing community partnership resources. Seeks community information and stays current on services, policies, and resources available. [10%]
Increase student academic success through a variety of interventions as well as connecting students to appropriate services. [10%]
Develop rapport and maintain ongoing communication with families and youth through school, home/shelter/motel visits, phone calls, monthly calendars, and other written materials. [10%]
Coordinate with CCSD Admissions team for expedient school registration. [5%]
Track and report all services provided in alignment with McKenney-Vento and district guidelines. Provide essential supply needs including: backpacks, supplies and uniform clothing. [5%]
Provide outreach and visibility within the district and communities assigned, including at organized events and awareness trainings. [5%]
Attends all required activities, meetings, and trainings. [5%]
Actively participate in continuing education opportunities to enhance job performance. [5%]
Perform other related duties as assigned or requested. [5%]
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: The minimum amounts of formal education, professional work experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities that must be met for a candidate to be considered for a position.
Associate’s degree or equivalent amount of formal education beyond high school.
Minimum of three (3) years administrative assistant/clerical or project coordination or management experience.
Proficient computer skills, including comprehensive knowledge of Google
Maintain the confidentiality of student information.
Strong public speaking and presentation skills.
A passionate and committed belief that youth can rise above seemingly insurmountable obstacles and stay engaged in school, graduate, and enter into post-secondary education.
Cultural competency and knowledge of issues related to poverty.
Criminal background check and fingerprinting required for hire.
MINIMUM CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES: The minimum certifications and licenses that must be met, valid, and unexpired for a candidate to be considered for a position.
Colorado driver’s license, car, auto insurance, and a good driving record.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Any job-related formal education, professional work experience, knowledge, skills, abilities, certifications, licenses, and other criteria that are inessential and in addition to the minimum qualifications, certifications, and licenses.
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college.
Bilingual (English/Spanish).
Knowledge of the experiences of children, youth and families who are unhoused and in transition.
Knowledge of the McKinney-Vento Act.
Knowledge of district intervention programs- MTSS, Trauma Informed Practices and Restorative Justice Models.
Knowledge of community resources.
Ability to relate and build strong relationships and educational partnerships with youth and parents/guardians.
Strong organizational skills, detailed oriented with the ability to be flexible and work collaboratively with internal staff and external partners.
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Demonstrated appreciation of clear and appropriate boundaries with youth.
Effective time management and organizational skills with the ability to set goals, work independently, and drive results.
Ability to communicate diplomatically and persuasively through effective verbal, written, and presentation skills.
Strong interpersonal and leadership skills, including the ability to collaborate with a high-performing team.
Effectively handles multiple demands and competing deadlines even with interruptions.
Self-starter/leader who can anticipate department needs in a proactive manner.
Ability to work under pressure and adapt to changing circumstances with a positive attitude
Ability to be flexible with schedule and work some weekend and evening events.
