We have an opportunity for a technician with laboratory experience to join our Corrosion Testing team. The role involves preparing and executing corrosion inhibitor performance tests, recording test results and presenting to senior colleagues, maintaining essential laboratory equipment and documentation, while always working to high standards of safety, quality and good housekeeping. Please note, this role is based full time on-site in Manchester in our offices in Trafford Park.
Required skills and experience:
Experience in a scientific laboratory environment, the role would ideally suit candidates with a chemistry background and with hands-on practical skills.
Experience with handling chemicals, including the preparation and use of COSHH assessments.
Some experience with handling / processing metallic materials or familiarity with pressure systems and Swagelok™ type fittings would be advantageous.
Good general education such as A levels, BTech, HNC including science or engineering subjects with good written and verbal communication.
Computer literate and familiar with MS Office applications.
Flexible approach and ability to work across groups in a cooperative manner and maintain desired standard of work.
Excellent team player.
ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY
Key activities:
Carry out testing programmes for the assessment of corrosion inhibitor performance in high temperature and high-pressure environments, using electrochemical monitoring methods.
Prepare metallic test specimens, including the use of cutting wheels and sanding / polishing belts and plates.
Prepare test solutions using general chemical laboratory techniques such as the use of micropipettes, 4 figure balances, dilution methods and calculation of solution concentrations.
Handle chemicals required during testing in accordance with COSHH, and health and safety risk assessments.
Preparation of test vessels and electrode assemblies.
Maintain accurate records of observations and calculations.
Take down and cleaning of test vessels post-test.
Preparation of samples for post-test examination through cleaning, descaling and examination by microscopy / photography of samples.
The role entails elements of manual handling, for example: the use of hand and power tools, manipulation of autoclave vessels and transport 50 litre compressed gas cylinders around the site.
Safe handling and use of bottled gases including hydrogen sulfide.
Preparation, maintenance, and operation of a variety of laboratory equipment including pressure vessels and electronic devices.
Applying discretionary effort in support of the smooth running of projects and of the laboratories.
On the job training will be provided.
