About (Pre Admission Testing - Pediatric PAT Nurse):
The pre-Admission Testing (PAT) unit works collaboratively with hospitalists and anesthesiologists to optimize patients for surgical and endoscopic procedures. PAT has 2 methods of working with patients. One method is a “Clinic” setting in which patients have in-person visits to assess their current health status to determine additional preprocedural testing and/or care to optimize their health prior to procedure. The second method is a “Call Center” setting in which all patients, adult and pediatrics, are contacted for a phone interview for a nursing assessment and to provide instructions for day of procedure. Our anesthesiologists work closely with our PAT team in providing guidance on medications and high-risk conditions they may want to discuss further before surgery occurs.
The Pediatric PAT Nurse will be a unique role. This nurse will review pediatric surgical cases approximately 2 weeks before they occur by checking medical history, medications, and any other pertinent information. They will work directly with Riley anesthesiologists to determine which patients are appropriate to have surgery at IU North Hospital, and which patients may be at higher risk and require further discussion.
Nursing skills gained on this unit:
- Nursing assessment and identification of risk factors for procedures
- Pre-anesthesia teaching to patient, family, and colleagues within PAT
- Utilization of various technologies that includes but is not limited to Cerner, Jabber, TEAMs, and Diagnotes to communicate and discuss cases efficiently and effectively in a secure virtual environment
- Teamwork, collaboration, and effective communication

Qualifications:
- Requires an Associates of Nursing (ASN); Bachelors of Nursing (BSN) preferred.
- Requires an active Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of Indiana or an active Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) RN license.
- Requires that the RN has graduated from a nationally accredited nursing program.
- Requires Basic Life Support certification through the AHA.
- Other advanced Life Support certifications may be required per unit/department specialty according to patient care policies.
