Role description:

As part of a growing and agile business, our Environmental Planning team is looking for an EIA/SEA Environmental Planning Technical Director with a broad range of EIA/SEA and / or planning and consents experience. You will be instrumental in improving environmental performance and delivering impact assessments for a diverse range of projects, such as large scale energy and infrastructure projects, mixed-use development schemes for private and public clients, public realm and masterplanning projects.  You will play a key role in the successful delivery of major multi-disciplinary projects, work in a flexible and collaborative environment supported by digital innovation, establish strong client relationships, develop new areas of business and mentor others in the team.

With your specialism in environmental management, or your technical or sustainability expertise, your work could involve protected species, pollution, surface water and materials management, air quality or noise. And in some of the world’s busiest and most beautiful locations.

Role accountabilities:

You will be delivering projects across multiple consenting regimes including Development Consent Orders, Transport and Works Act Orders, Town and Country Planning Act, Hybrid Bill etc. You will be driving the growth of the environmental and planning and consenting capability at Arcadis, as part of an integrated Planning and Environmental Impact and Assessment offering.

You will lead multi-disciplinary teams in winning and delivering work, and growing our technical capability. You will also lead on the coordination and delivery of environmental work being undertaken by multi-disciplinary teams, influencing project development and delivering optimal environmental outcomes.

This role will work with both engineers and environmental specialist teams to consider all aspects of design development, providing guidance, advice and ensuring compliance across the UK / internationally. You will provide technical direction and oversight on projects within the team including writing, checking and review of deliverables, with financial/commercial responsibility.

You will also lead and support tender proposal/ bids - working as part of a project winning team. You will engage with consultees and stakeholders and help grow and develop the wider Planning and Environmental Assessment and Management Team through mentoring, and possible line management.

Qualifications & Experience:

You will have an excellent knowledge of EIA practices and procedures, including case law, and a solid understanding of environmental and sustainability principles and environmental technical specialisms. Other skills and experience that we are looking for include:

  • Experience across a range of project types
  • Proven experience of managing and coordinating EIAs, including the technical review of specialist chapters
  • Practical working knowledge of the UK planning system and consenting process
  • Strong report writing, verbal and presentation skills with experience in reviewing the work of others to ensure quality
  • Experience in multi-disciplinary co-ordination and leadership of projects, with good project management and technical skills
  • Experience in consulting and negotiating with planning authorities, regulators and stakeholders
  • Commercial expertise, including forecasting, project management and quality assurance
  • Relevant degree or equivalent qualification, preferably with chartered status or working towards
  • A flexible, pragmatic, and collaborative approach to work
  • Experience in the delivery of SEA and/ or Integrated Impact Assessment (IIA) projects would be welcomed
  • Desired: Full Member of IEMA/IES and CEnv.
