R&D- Applications Engineer at Sherwin-Williams

Job Descrption

The Applications Engineer initiates and leads projects and serves as a liaison between research and development, technical service, sales, customers and related departments to assure new products under development translate to successful operation at customer lines.  Responsibilities may include performing fundamental to complex projects, identifying equipment and pilot capabilities, providing technical and operational recommendations to customers, and interfacing with multiple functions and divisions within the company as well as with outside vendors.  The Applications Engineer operates under limited supervision and will explore and recommend new application and line capabilities as well as assuring product fit to existing coil lines.  

• Assists with establishing and serving customers, operates under general supervision and applies basic project management techniques, and responds to questions and concerns, communicates equipment and technical specifications, and establishes line and operational guidelines.
• Provides technical direction and assistance to customers and product development formulators on the application of the product lines; works with various locations on a project basis and/or based on technical expertise.
• Serves as a technical and operational advisor to customers and product development formulators, receives direction or guidance on complex issues, and applies general quality tools and analytical concepts to assist with improving product quality, robustness and efficiency.
• Serves as a liaison between sales/technical service and other members of the R&D team by developing a complete understanding of needs and operations, and providing information to sales, research and development, and technical service as required to satisfy customer needs.
• Provides general professional assistance when working with suppliers and vendors to review product specifications, new or updated equipment, and other activities to ensure the quality and efficiency of internal and customer operations and to facilitate new product development. 
• Performs other duties as assigned.
 

 

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
•   Must be legally authorized to work in the country for which you are applying for employment (without now or in the future needing sponsorship for employment work visa and/or permanent residence status).
•   High school diploma + 10 years in coatings formulations and/or coatings applications -OR- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Chemistry, or related field + 3 years in coatings formulations and/or coatings applications.  
•   Must be able, with or without reasonable accommodation, to determine the difference between colors so you can correctly tint paint to the colors desired by customers.
•   PC skills; Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook); and other applications as required
•   Utilizing industry and product applications concepts and procedures
•   Understanding of advanced technical (lab, research, etc.) principles and practices
•   Understanding of applications equipment and specifications
•   Applying expert principles and practices within an area or general principles and practices in multiple service
•   Providing technical guidance and advice to improve quality and efficiency
•   Working with line and management personnel
•   Communicating technical and operational concepts to facilitate sales
•   Providing technical customer service
•   Working with multiple divisions of organizations (i.e. sales, tech service, research and development, operations, etc.)

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
•   2+ years of experience as a Technical Service Representative 
•   Demonstrated experience planning and leading customer line trials
•   Previous coil coatings or radiation cure experience (lab or field)

Travel Requirements: 30% Domestic & International
