Digital Forensics Apprentice at West Midlands Police

Job Descrption

This apprenticeship is a 24 month temporary role 

The Digital Forensic Apprentice will learn and develop practical skills in a range of digital practices and services offered by West Midlands and Warwickshire Police. These services include preservation of digital evidence recovered from crime scenes, data extraction, processing from a range of devices, and the analysis and presentation of evidence for the criminal justice system under close supervision from an allocated mentor.

Key Responsibilities 

  • Produce a professional development portfolio by completing an accredited course of study and training courses. Also achieving, and maintaining competence to support a range of digital evidence activities and administrative tasks. 
  • Develop, and evidence, an understanding of Digital Forensic good practice methodologies (ISO17025, 17020 standards, FSR Codes, ACPO Principles of Digital Evidence and other legislation), used in the examination of computers, mobile phones, CCTV, and other digital devices 
  • Evidence a knowledge and understanding of departmental technical procedures, working instructions and other departmental ISO documentation in line with our Accredited practices (ISO17025/17020 standards and FSR Codes). 
  • Develop a practical understanding of the principles of digital evidence and how it is used to support investigations and criminal justice processes. 
  • Supported by Digital Forensic staff, use a wide range of commercial and specialist digital forensic and video analysis software and hardware tools. Working under instruction, to provide assistance to the Digital Forensic Examiners. 
  • Safe handling of forensic exhibits to ensure continuity, confidentiality, and security is maintained at all times.
  •  Record contemporaneous notes on all forensic processes used and be able to present in a report, ensuring compliance and integrity with ISO 17025/17020 accreditation. 
  • Supported by a mentor, examine and process material of a sensitive nature, in line with Information Management and Data Protection 
  • To carry out any duties commensurate with the purpose of the post that may from time to time be determined

 

Knowledge and Experience

Essential

  • Must possess good interpersonal, communication, and organisational skills. 
  • Must be able to demonstrate good presentation skills. 
  • Must be able to follow clearly defined working instructions. 
  • Must demonstrate an ability to utilise IT systems including, Microsoft Word, Excel, SharePoint, PowerPoint and others. 
  • A-Level or equivalent in a science subject, and GCSE Grade 4 in Maths and English.

Desirable 

  • Have an interest in computer systems, CCTV, operating systems, data storage & cloud technologies. 
  • Have good written communication skills, and you’ll be able to talk to people from a range of different backgrounds. 
  • Have a high level of integrity, respect for privacy, and adherence to legal and ethical standards when handling sensitive digital information

Conditions

  • Must be 18+ years of age 
  • Must be prepared to handle material that may be offensive or distressing. 
  • Appointments to this post are subject to specific vetting and medical clearance. 
  • Confidentiality and trust are very important in this post and must be maintained at all times. 
  • Working Hours: Mon – Fri 9am to 5pm (start/finish times can be flexible) 
  • 36.5 hours per week (based on a working week of 37 hour)

 

Vetting - Successful applicants will be required to pass Recruitment Vetting and Counter Terrorism Clearance scrutiny prior to commencing their role, this will include a full background & financial disclosure as part of the vetting process.

Medical - Appointment to this role will be dependent upon successfully medical checks, which may include a drugs test and if required a fitness test.
