Detailed Description

The Technology Specialist will work within the MDMC (Medical Device Manufacturing Centre), which in Phase 2 is funded by Scottish Enterprise. The centre supports Scottish SMEs, manufacturing medical devices, offering manufacturing, engineering, regulatory and business development expertise. This post would suit someone who enjoys working in a high paced environment, on a variety of relatively short-term projects.

MDMC facilities include various manufacturing techniques as well as a suite of analysis equipment. The technologies that are available include, but are not limited to: laser micro-machining, laser cutting, laser welding, 3D printing, spray jetting of conductive inks, low temperature co-fired ceramic, optical material modification, electro-discharge machining (EDM), injection moulding and suite of analysis equipment, including microscopes, SEM, optical surface profiler, polishing and sectioning equipment

The applicant will be expected to work directly with Prof. Duncan Hand (Director), Prof Marc Desmulliez (Manager), Business Development Executive to be appointed, Jo King (Finance), Karen Allan (Administration), DrTamer Cosgun, Dr Joshua Paulinus, Dr Jane Crowley (Technology Specialists), Karen Hunter (Business Development Executive), and Donna Grant (Finance Administrator); also with MDMC colleagues at the partner universities.

Key Duties and Responsibilities 

The post holder is required to;

  • Within the project, the technology specialist will be responsible for the design, manufacturing and analysis of various components for Scottish SMEs. Tasks will also include literature reviews, report writing and presentation of finding/results.
  • We are looking for a creative and highly motivated technology specialist willing to work as part of a team. Good communication skills and an appropriate publication record are essential. 
  • General tasks will involve scientific research; analysis and interpretation of data; daily oversight of the activities in the laboratory; communication with other investigators involved in this collaborative project; preparation of scientific reports and presentation to the SMEs 
  • Responsibilities will also include assistance in the day-to-day maintenance of the experimental facilities, liaising with companies and external collaborators.  
  • The successful candidate is also expected to be involved in our outreach activities, with roles that can be tuned to the specific preferences of the candidate but will involve for example interviews, presentations, talks for the general public and preparation of experimental demonstrators for use in schools.
  • The successful candidate would be expected to work creatively, keep up to date and within the boundaries of risk assessments and COSHH safety requirements.

Education, Qualifications and Experience

Essential Criteria

  • Applicants should hold a degree-level qualification in a relevant area of Physics or Engineering or related subject
  • Have completed a PhD (or submitted a PhD thesis by the starting date), or have equivalent experience
  • Ability to articulate technical work, both in technical reports/papers and by oral presentation
  • Must have proven academic ability and a demonstrable high level of technical competence in experimental science and the analysis /modelling of the results. 
  • Ability to formulate and progress work on their initiative with evidence of technical ability: problem-solving, flexibility
  • Must be able to work as part of a team on the experiments at Heriot-Watt out with the specific project and more widely with the collaborators at other Universities
  • Capability to be self-directed and think innovatively.

Desirable Criteria

  • Evidence of ability to present work effectively in person, e.g. at conferences and seminars.
  • Experience in leading the writing of scientific papers, reports.
  • Experience in programming for data acquisition (e.g. LabVIEW) and analysis.
  • Experience in computer modelling
  • Evidence of ability, subject to opportunity, to guide other researchers, e.g. PhD students and undergraduate project students.
  • Energy and enthusiasm for the project.

  • Training requirement for various machines.
  • Visits at MDMC client’s sites for meetings.
  • Visits at MDMC partner university sites for various meetings

The Medical Device Manufacturing Centre (https://mdmc.ac.uk/) acts as a portal to provide medical device developers and manufacturers with the advice, technical expertise, and facilities essential for companies that are seeking to translate medical device concepts to commercial products. Our mission is to provide expert advice on manufacturing, engineering, regulatory issues and funding, coupled with technically supported access to manufacturing facilities. We aim to assist small and medium sized companies in the translation of medical device concepts through to small batch commercial prototypes. This service is free for Scottish companies only.  The MDMC is a 5-university consortium: Heriot-Watt, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Dundee and Robert Gordon Universities, and is headquartered at Heriot-Watt.
