Our communications and public affairs priorities align with these areas, and we seek to highlights key themes such as net zero, adaption and resilience and ESG priorities.

As directed by the UK Head of Media and Public Affairs, the role holder will work alongside the Public Affairs Advocacy Manager to nurture and grow relationships with key stakeholders in Westminster, Whitehall, devolved regions and beyond, positioning WSP as a trusted public policy influencer, government adviser and industry change agent.
 

  • Monitoring activity in Westminster and Whitehall, keeping a close eye on legislative and policy developments that impact WSP’s business and operations
  • Actively keeping abreast of policy and regulatory developments in the built & natural environments and across industry, seeking out opportunities for constructive public affairs engagement
  • Support research and drafting of written submissions to government consultations and select committee inquiries
  • Drafting policy briefings for a variety of business audiences
  • As required, attending Select Committee hearings, conferences, member groups and other external activities relevant to WSP’s key business priorities and projects
  • As directed, supporting and maintaining positive communications with relevant public bodies, driving WSP’s activity within key membership groups and relevant political stakeholders
  • Updating and maintaining the public affairs stakeholder engagement and advocacy tracker, ensuring regular contact, in person and in writing, with relevant business leads and external partners/stakeholders at national, devolved, regional and local levels
  • Supporting the delivery of a programme of targeted advocacy, which positions WSP as a ‘trusted advisor to government’ and at the front of mind of policymakers as an industry expert
  • Supporting the broader Communications (Media and Public Affairs) function, including the Press Office as required to ensure coherency of WSP messaging in relation to policy developments/ government announcements.
  • Providing positive support to business unit project teams to enhance client delivery through the lens of public policy advocacy
  • An Honours degree in a suitable discipline or equivalent education.
  • A strong interest in policy and public affairs, evidenced either via work experience in Westminster/Whitehall or in-house. Appropriate internships/placements are relevant.
  • Understanding of legislative processes and the various layers of Government in the UK
  • Strong inter-personal and oral/written communication skills, with ability to write logically and succinctly
  • Ability to multi-task and deliver high quality outputs despite tight and shifting deadlines 
  • Confidence, team spirit and enthusiasm to grow within a large and multi-faceted business
  • A collaborative mindset, willingness to learn and ‘can do’ approach

Other Desirable Experience

  • Master's Level degree education, including research/analytical skills
  • Experience working within a B2B setting at a national or global level
  • Experience in the use of social media platforms, (inc. LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook and Instagram) and MS Office tools such as Excel and PowerPoint.
