WSP has one of the largest pools of biodiversity and fluvial geomorphology technical specialists in the UK. Sitting within our Hydromorphology Team within Sustainable Water Management, you will be working with a dedicated team of technical specialists in fluvial geomorphology, biodiversity, and water management. In addition, we work collaboratively with our Aquatic Ecology team to deliver Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) for Rivers and Streams, and our Ecology team to deliver a single BNG product to our clients. We deliver a wide range of high-quality BNG Rivers & Streams technical services on complex projects across a diverse range of sectors. Our UK and international markets are diverse and include low carbon and hydrogen, transport, water renewables, river, and habitat restoration, nuclear, power, waste, minerals, and property.

We have a fantastic opportunity for a new post within our Hydromorphology Team to coordinate and drive forward the technical delivery of BNG for Rivers and Streams as a Senior or Principal Consultant (other grades considered depending on experience). Our Hydromorphology Team covers both freshwater, transitional, and coastal geomorphology. We have a large pool of accredited River Condition Assessment (RCA) surveyors and backlog of projects requiring extensive RCA input and reporting for BNG. BNG is a big growth area for the team, therefore there is scope to drive forward the Biodiversity specialism for Rivers and Streams and make a positive contribution to our growth agenda. In parallel, there is opportunity to grow and develop our Natural Flood Management (NFM) expertise as part of this role.

We pride ourselves in operating at the leading edge of professional practice, with a reputation for innovation and technical excellence.

Open to applications nationwide, we are looking for an ambitious, driven, and experienced river and streams biodiversity practitioner who is focused on finding solutions and enthusiastic about delivering technical excellence in hydromorphology and BNG.

The successful applicant will enjoy the benefits of working within a caring ‘people first’ team which champions WSP’s commitments to diversity, inclusion, and equality. Therefore, we are also open to flexible working and reduced working hours for the right candidate.

  • Preparing proposals for BNG Rivers and Streams assessments, working collaboratively within the Hydromorphology team, Aquatic Ecology and Ecology BNG teams
  • Providing technical specialist support to our team of RCA accredited staff, including undertaking QA of data collected, data analysis and verifying the BNG metric results
  • Planning and organising our pool of RCA accredited staff for undertaking MoRPh5 and Ditch surveys
  • Leading MoRPh5 and Ditch field surveys, including RCA reconnaissance, Water Framework Directive (WFD) and geomorphology walkover surveys, providing mentoring and support to less experienced members of the team
  • Identifying enhancements for Rivers, Streams, and Ditches to fulfil the BNG mandatory requirement and taking consideration of WFD objectives and mitigation measures
  • Stakeholder and landowner engagement to obtain buy-in to the BNG Rivers and Streams strategy and potential enhancements required to deliver net gain
  • Providing clients with accurate, innovative, and proportionate technical and consenting advice in relation to BNG for Rivers and Streams on a range of exciting projects
  • Providing technical support to WFD assessments
  • Providing BNG Rivers and Streams inputs across all project lifecycles from bidding/ feasibility/optioneering, field survey planning / management / completion, detailed design, and assessment
  • Acting as technical author or lead as appropriate to produce the BNG Rivers, Streams, and Ditches assessments from project inception through to project completion, including technically reviewing reports
  • Providing technical lead support for WFD assessments
  • Producing high quality reports, as well as experience in scheduling and budget management responsibilities
  • Mentoring, coaching, and supporting junior staff. We are passionate about continual professional development and look to our senior staff to provide on the job coaching, mentoring and support to ensure our team members grow and develop to achieve their aspirations and meet our client needs
  • Networking across the wider UK consultancy business, developing relationships with team members in other technical disciplines in the pursuit of enhancing our offer to the market and in striving to continually innovate approaches, techniques, and solutions for our clients

The role requires excellent reporting and communications skills and the ability to work collaboratively within a team, seeking technical input from other disciplines to deliver carefully considered solutions and to produce high quality work. The required skills and qualifications include:

  • Professional experience of field survey planning and leading and coordinating a dispersed team of surveyors
  • Experience of technical lead for a range of projects, including project/task management, financial management and delivery of high-quality written reports
