Our Rail business is seeking a Client Engineering & Advisory Services Director to support the continued growth of our services by acting as a client lead across a diverse range of related subject areas that include Organisational Readiness, Asset Management and Maintenance, Systems Engineering, Railway De-carbonisation, and Programme Management.

As a Director in the group, you will be part of a team of recognised industry experts providing expert consultancy, thought leadership and a myriad advisory services to our clients.  You will also support our service leads in the growth and development of our services through strategic planning and focused client engagement activities.

Although part of the CEAS group, it is expected that you will work across our other Rail groups, and several wider WSP business units to develop, sell and deliver complimentary services. There will be a particular focus in working with the Systems Engineering, Integration and Assurance (SEIA) group to help develop and deliver a shared strategic advisory service to our clients.

The Rail Client Advisory and Engineering Services Group helps our clients solve the most complex rail transportation problems.  Whether a new or existing railway, public or private sector, passenger, or freight services, we use strategic and critical thinking together with understanding of how a railway system can be operated, to deliver the outcomes of moving people and goods to deliver social, economic, and environmental value.  As a Director, you will act at a senior level to provide a guiding mind and hands-on consulting to help us solve these complex problems.

A typical week would include:

As an experienced professional you’ll be used to facing a wide range of technical, commercial, people and other challenges across business and project activities.  The role has a series of core responsibilities which are broadly as follows:

  • Building and maintaining strong collaborative client relationships;
  • Providing strategic oversight and leadership for major projects and / or pursuits
  • Actively undertaking thought leadership to promote WSP capabilities and services;
  • Using proven leadership and communication skills internally and externally to gather intelligence, position for and secure future work;
  • Actively engaged in delivering on projects with potential to undertake client-side roles in positions of influence to facilitate growth and expansion of our services; and
  • Promoting the cross-selling of WSP services.

In addition, you will be enthusiastic about people development, and support the development of advisors, engineers and leaders coming through the business.

You’ll be passionate, engaging, energetic and articulate when bringing diverse, multi-disciplinary teams together to address the range of challenges our clients face.  You’ll also understand the importance of implementing robust systems and processes to ensure that our bid and projects deliver value for money in achieving client goals and requirements as well as and cost and programme targets.

  • Chartered Membership of a professional body such as the CMILT, MIRSE, MIET etc.
  • A proven record of providing leadership across a wide range of major rail and transport infrastructure projects for government, private sector and infrastructure management clients through the entire design and construction cycle.
  • An ability to establish, build, sustain and share strong, professional relationships with relevant groups both inside and outside the organisation. You’re naturally driven to exceed client expectations.
  • An ability to reason logically and apply a systematic process to finding solutions, proactive in responding to problems, able to apply sound logic in situations of ambiguity and problem-solving methodologies across a range of circumstances.
  • A deep understanding of what our railways major clients need, both nationally and internationally, and how we best tailor our services and build robust and lasting relationships.
  • A desire to constantly improve, motivate and encourage others, potentially leading and implement change programmes within a project context, inspiring colleagues and driving an innovative and supportive culture.
  • A forward-thinking mindset, capable of visualising and planning for the longer term. Designs, communicates, engages, and drives the implementation of project and technical initiatives and strategies.
  • Actively promote knowledge sharing, ideas, and intelligence. Strong presentation skills, able to lead and facilitate workshops, training sessions and one to one learning.  Influential and persuasive internally and externally, encourages open dialogue and feedback.
  • A desire to develop and secure opportunities through active business development, Key Account Management and work winning activities.
  • A passion for developing the next generation of consultants, engineers, and project leaders.
  • A commitment to driving the sustainability of projects toward a target of net zero.
  • Experience in asset management / maintenance, systems engineering and programme management.
