Job Descrption

In today’s world it’s important to work for a company that has clear purpose, giving back to communities and supporting what is truly important in the world.

When considering a career move it’s vital to work for a business that is aligned to your values and goals, a place where you can belong. See what WSP stands for in 2024 and beyond…

We have an exciting opportunity for a Senior/Principal Numerical Modeller to join our UK-based Geoscience Modelling team, delivering value-added consultancy solutions to clients in the Nuclear, Energy, Mining, Environmental and Infrastructure sectors. Our projects range widely over hydrogeological modelling, contaminant transport, nuclear safety assessment, rock mechanics/geomechanics, reservoir characterisation and development, mineral extraction and tunnelling.

In this role, you will contribute to the full lifecycle of geoscience modelling projects: from developing new business, submitting bids, delivery of studies and presenting to clients. You will be expected to innovate technical solutions, often involving development of bespoke software, to meet clients’ challenges, and coordinate small teams to implement them. You will have the opportunity to work alongside experienced consultants, from a variety of different discipline groups, on exciting and challenging projects in a range of international locations.

This position will suit someone who can demonstrate strong technical, analytical, programming and numerical modelling skills, together with an interest in applying those skills and geoscientific technologies to a wide range of subsurface engineering projects.

  • Delivering bespoke numerical modelling projects across a range of geoscience contexts, with a particular focus on subsurface flow modelling. Projects may require hydrogeological modelling, reservoir simulation/history matching, computational fluid dynamics (CFD), uncertainty analysis/quantification and simulation of coupled-processes (e.g. of thermo-hydro-mechanical and/or chemical processes)
  • Assisting with the development of software solutions (e.g. for numerical simulation, subsurface data management and/or data visualisation) within the global geoscience modelling team, including development of WSP’s in-house FracMan® modelling software, to stay ahead of the market
  • Maintaining close links with our clients in WSP’s various business sectors, including delivering software training courses, seeking opportunities to offer our existing services or innovating new solutions to fit clients’ needs
  • Assisting business development and writing proposals to help grow our portfolio of modelling projects
  • Working closely with both global and domestic geoscience teams to develop and innovate the business lines and services that our team can provide
  • Communicate project deliverables to clients and be an advocate for our modelling services to both external and internal stakeholders
  • Staying abreast of the latest technological advances and industry trends in the fields of computational geoscience and numerical modelling

YOUR TEAM

  • You will be joining a multi-disciplinary team of experts in the UK, with a focus of the delivery of technologically-driven consulting and software solutions. Our projects range across industries including Energy (including renewables such as geothermal and CCUS, as well as oil & gas), Nuclear waste disposal (spanning geosphere characterisation, environmental safety and engineering), Infrastructure (tunnels, slopes, geotechnics and underground storage), and Mining (from slope/bench stability, underground mining, to lithium extraction and leaching)
  • Our business and clients span all corners of the globe, covering major international companies, government organisations and academia
  • This role reports to the senior leaders of the WSP Geoscience Modelling group, located in the UK. The core of our UK-based team is made up of approximately 12 members, covering geology, geomechanics/engineering, hydrogeology, geophysics and software engineering. However, we routinely collaborate with international geoscience and engineering colleagues in Europe, North America, the Middle East, and Australasia on the delivery of world-class consulting projects.

Essential skills and experience:

  • Doctorate or Master’s degree (or equivalent) in a Mathematical, Engineering, Earth Science or Physics-related field
  • Strong track record of the use and development of numerical modelling tools and techniques, as applied to hydrogeological, fluid dynamics and/or reservoir engineering applications
  • Experience of scripting languages such as (ideally) Python, or similar (e.g. MATLAB, R)
  • Ability to demonstrate a resourceful approach to work, displaying initiative and strong decision-making skills
  • Excellent verbal communication skills, in English, with the ability to both absorb and impart information effectively
  • Excellent scientific writing ability, with experience of producing high-quality technical reports and papers

In addition, one or more of the following skills will strengthen the application:

  • Consulting experience of delivering geoscience-related projects in one or more of our target sectors (Energy, Nuclear, Environment and Infrastructure)
  • Experience of software development in languages such as Fortran, C++, or Java
  • Experience of data management using SQL/PostgreSQL and related tools
  • Successful experience of preparing bids to competitive tender processes
  • Experience in liaising with clients and managing professional relationships
  • Project Management skills
