Wood is recruiting for a Lead Process Engineer to join our onshore linear assets team to support onshore pipeline and associated facilities projects within our Technical Consulting Division. This role will primarily be based in our Staines office with some hybrid working available.

The Role
As a Lead Process Engineer for onshore pipelines projects, you will play a pivotal role in overseeing and managing the process engineering aspects of pipeline projects from concept to completion. You will be responsible for ensuring the safe, efficient, and cost-effective design and operation of onshore pipeline systems. This role involves collaboration with multidisciplinary teams, client engagement, and adherence to industry standards and regulations.
The onshore pipeline projects that we service are predominantly within the UK, Europe and Africa, but also some further across the globe.
In order to reach the Net Zero goals, implementation of Onshore pipelines servicing Hydrogen and CO2 is essential, and this Wood team has been at the forefront of the development of these projects. This team will also support projects for conventional energy, water and utilities.
The projects are varied and interesting due to the different sectors that we support ranging from short pipelines to over a few thousand kilometres of cross-country pipelines and associated facilities, with many technical complications that need innovative solutions.

Key Responsibilities:
Project Leadership:
- Lead the process engineering team in the development and execution of onshore pipeline projects.
- Provide technical leadership and guidance to ensure project objectives are met within schedule and budget constraints.
- Collaborate with other engineering disciplines to integrate process requirements into overall project design.
Process Design and Simulation:
- Conduct process simulations to optimize pipeline design, ensuring efficient and safe transportation of fluids.
- Develop material and energy balance, process flow diagrams (PFDs) and piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs), cause and effect diagram for pipeline systems.
- Perform sizing calculations and specify pipelines and associated equipment including tanks, vessels, control valves, relief valves, pumps, compressors and separators.
Safety and Regulatory Compliance:
- Ensure compliance with industry codes, standards, and regulatory requirements related to onshore pipelines.
- Conduct hazard and operability (HAZOP) studies and participate in safety reviews to identify and mitigate process safety risks.
Material and Equipment Selection:
- Select appropriate materials for pipeline construction based on process conditions and environmental factors.
- Specify and evaluate equipment for the transportation and handling of fluids in onshore pipeline systems.
- Preparation of process datasheets.
Hydraulic Analysis:
- Perform hydraulic analysis to optimize pipeline sizing and ensure adequate fluid flow for concept studies.
- Review Flow Assurance work such as steady state and transient analyses reports.
- Support Flow Assurance activities to evaluate and mitigate pressure drop, surge, and other hydraulic issues.
Procurement support:
- Support the evaluation of technical bids and vendor drawing reviews.
- Support the project manager in attending meeting with vendors and suppliers.
Construction and Commissioning Support:
- Collaborate with project management and construction teams to ensure the proper implementation of process designs during construction.
- Provide technical support during commissioning and start-up phases of onshore pipeline projects.
Client Interaction:
- Engage with clients to understand project requirements and objectives.
- Provide regular updates and ensure client satisfaction by delivering high-quality engineering solutions.
Proposals and Business Development Support
- Prepare process related manhour estimations for the preparation of proposals and bids.
- Prepare process design method statements and other tender related documents.
Internal
- Mentor and support the career development of engineers within the onshore department.
- Involvement in industry conferences, business development activities and company initiatives such as community support programmes etc.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Chemical Engineering or a related field.
- Professional Engineering (PE) license is preferred.
- Extensive experience in process engineering, with a focus on onshore pipelines.
- Strong knowledge of industry standards, codes, and regulations.
- Proficiency in process simulation software and engineering design tools
- Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
Experience:
- Previous experience in process engineering for onshore pipelines.
- Proven track record of successfully leading and delivering the process scope for onshore pipeline and associated facilities projects.
- Experience in the execution of conceptual design, feasibility studies, conceptual design, FEED, detail design, procurement support, construction, testing and commissioning.
