The Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry, Bureau of Resource Information & Land Use Planning, has a confidential position of State Geologist open for recruitment.
JOB DESCRIPTION: This position provides administrative and policy oversight on all the programs at the Maine Geological Survey. This position is the primary spokesperson for the State Government on geological issues. Furthermore, the position exerts significant influence on statewide policy issues of a geological nature, such as policies on groundwater, geologic hazards, climate change impacts, and mineral resources and mining. It does this by participating in high-level policy processes, and by developing briefing papers and testimony for consideration by the Administration and the Legislature. Additionally, the position influences national policy related to geosciences by participating in national groups and interacting with Maine’s Congressional Delegation. The position is responsible for developing and managing the budget, seeking additional funding through grants, and developing collaborative relationships with other agencies and institutions. It is responsible for hiring, supervision, and coaching of Maine Geological Survey personnel.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A Master’s Degree in Geology and three (3) years of experience in geological work at an administrative level responsible for project completion, financial and personnel management. Equivalent work experience may be substituted for education on a year-for-year basis.
LICENSING/REGISTRATION/CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: (These must be met by all employees prior to attaining permanent status in this class): Must hold current State of Maine Geologist license or obtain within 6 months upon hire and be in good standing with the Board of Licensure of Geologists and Soil Scientists.
