Who we are:

The Driver License Examiner for the Bureau of Motor Vehicles in our Portland, ME area is professional services licensing work involving the administration of examinations to applicants for commercial driver licenses, Class A, B, C, motorcycle, and school bus driver licenses.  Work activity may be performed outside in all types of weather, including inclement rain/snow conditions or excessive heat. In addition to English language fluency, fluency in any of the following languages:  Arabic, Dari, French, Khmer, Lingala, Pashto, Portuguese, Somali, Spanish, Vietnamese, and other central and west African dialects is desirable.  Normal work hours are Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.  Upon successful completion of qualification training, you will be provided a state vehicle for official travel purposes as well as uniforms and an annual uniform maintenance allowance.Statewide travel is required.  

A typical day involves:

  • Conducting pre-trip vehicle evaluations and administers driving skills test.
  • Administering and scoring road skill test for Class A, B, and C vehicles, motorcycles, and school buses, and special examinations to physically challenged and/or adverse driving applicants.
  • Administering and scoring written/oral test on traffic laws, explaining test results if necessary, to determine applicant's knowledge of traffic and safety rules.
  • Administering vision screening examinations to identify applicant's visual acuity for issuance of operator's license/permit.
  • Explaining applicable laws, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures to individuals applying for licensure.
  • Answers inquiries from the public to provide accurate information to applicants in areas outside of the central office.

To be successful, you will need:

  • Knowledge of motor vehicle law (Title 29).
  • Knowledge of traffic and safety rules.
  • Knowledge of requisite maneuvers for acceptable driving.
  • Ability to work without direct supervision.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in a calm, non-judgmental manner and maintain calm in stressful situations.
  • Ability to control vehicle during exam.
  • Ability to explain test results.
  • Ability to lift and carry supplies weighing up to 40 lbs for long distances (200 feet) up and down stair in order to set up and prepare for examinations.
  • Ability to use electronic tablet and desktop software.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Two (2) years of work experience affording public contact, knowledge of Maine motor vehicle Laws and regulations, and a high school diploma or equivalent.  
  • Successfully pass a National Criminal Background check, including fingerprinting prior to hire. 
 NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Possession of a valid Motor Vehicle Driver’s License (you must show proof of license before hire) and have no extensive motor vehicle violations.
  • Live or be willing to move within 35 miles of the assigned office.
  • Ability to successfully complete all testing requirements to obtain a commercial driver’s license.
  • Successfully pass a National Criminal Background check, including fingerprinting.
  • Regional travel is required.
