SCOPE OF POSITION:    Crafts: Organize and set up the craft house to facilitate arts and crafts for campers and staff, maintain inventory, and order supplies.

Campfire: Organize fun and interactive nightly campfire programs.

EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum High School Graduate or equivalent required.
  • Must have a valid Driver’s License.
  • 2 seasons of summer camp experience or 1 year in equivalent work required.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Desire to work with youth.
  • Ability to supervise and provide guidance to staff and campers.
  • Ability to diffuse stressful situations with staff and campers.
  • Possess leadership skills with the ability to plan, organize, and execute special programs.
  • Ability to communicate well with others from diverse backgrounds, ages, and nationalities.
  • Ability to work in groups.
  • Ability to observe camper behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior management techniques.
  • Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards at all times.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and be comfortable working with a high degree of independence.
  • Ability to make independent decisions that may involve unique or unusual situations and/or complex issues and dealing with demanding requests or timelines.
  • Good character, integrity, and adaptability

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Craft Duties:

  • Lead and coordinate craft house activities during all open hours such as free time, electives, and cabin activity.
  • Implement creative craft ideas for campers and staff.
  • Keep the craft area clean and well organized and deep clean at the end of the week.
  • Keep an ongoing inventory list of craft supplies.
  • Prepare and place craft house supply order, as necessary, with the approval of the Creative Coordinator.
  • Assist cabin leaders with the preparation of craft ideas and clean-up of daily cabin activities.
  • Assist with the preparation and clean-up of electives held in the craft house.
  • Assist creative and other staff to prepare for evening campfire and chapels, assisting with providing any craft house supplies needed for those programs.
  • Help create campfire props and decorations as directed.
  • Assist campers in creating props and decorations for campfire program and activities as needed.

Campfire Duties:

  • Lead and coordinate fun, themed campfire program daily, including songs, skits, decorations, and interactive games.
  • Involve and communicate with other staff including creative team, seasonal camp staff and any guest staff and/or volunteers.

General Duties:

  • Foster and nurture Christian faith and discipleship in visible, fruitful ways in, and with campers.
  • Attend and participate in programs and spiritual activities.
  • Enforce respect for personal property, camp equipment, and facilities.
  • Develop and maintain positive working relationships with all staff, volunteers, and campers.
  • Enforce adherence to camp and Salvation Army policies and procedures.
  • Participate and/or assist in all summer camp programs as required e.g., chapel, staff meetings, campfire, camp wide games, night-watch, free-time, electives, rise and shine duty, etc.
  • Perform any other duties as assigned by the Creative Coordinator.
  • May be required to serve as Break Day Supervisor at times during the season.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to sit, walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel, hike, and twist on a continuous basis for up to 15-20 minutes or prolonged periods at a time.
  • Ability to grasp, push, pull objects, such as files, file cabinets drawers, and reach overhead.
  • Ability to lift to 25 lbs.
  • Physical ability to respond to a variety of situations; must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness or injury) and possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • There may be phone and in-person contact with others from diverse backgrounds who may be angry, hostile, confused, or frustrated.
  • May be required to work in all areas of camp including, but not limited to, the kitchen, dish room, laundry facility and grounds.
  • Working in a distinctively Christian environment.
  • Possible exposure to communicable diseases.
  • Work outdoors, sometimes in inclement weather.
  • Work around dust, odor, and high noise levels.

MISCELLANEOUS:

The Salvation Army does have a dress code. This will be shared with you at the time of employment.

The candidate chosen for this position will be required to pass a motor vehicle record check. They must have a valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record.
