Eurofins Forensic Services (EFS) offers a service for the screening of bovine, ovine and caprine brainstem samples (taken from fallen stock, i.e. animals which have been found dead or from animals slaughtered at abattoirs) for the presence of indicators of TSE (Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathy).
The testing is carried out using a documented European Commission approved procedure. The screening of samples for the presence of BSE (Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy) and Scrapie takes place in a high throughput, purpose built category 3 facility, with a dedicated, experienced TSE team.

The Role
An opportunity has arisen for an analyst for TSE (transmissible spongiform encephalopathy) testing to join the laboratory testing team based in Birchwood Park.
The role comprises the examination of animal tissue for the presence of indicators of TSE using a documented European Commission approved procedure, namely the IDEXX HerdChek Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy–Scrapie Antigen Test Kit. This role is specific to the methods and processes used in the analysis of brainstem samples submitted for testing and also includes some in-team support tasks, including, but not limited to, laboratory cleaning and reagent preparation.

Knowledge, Experience and Technical Skills
The post is suited to people with well-developed practical skills and a strong commitment to work at the bench in a high throughput laboratory. They will need to be able to work well as a member of a team and collaborate closely with colleagues performing similar roles. GLP is paramount in this working environment to ensure the integrity and traceability of the sample types received for testing. A major function will be to carry out analyses according to the approved protocol for sample preparation and analytical methodology prescribed (ELISA). A practical background in the analysis of biological materials is advantageous but not essential as training will be provided. Experience of LIMS would be advantageous.
