Our Site:
Jealott's Hill International Research Centre is situated in pleasant semi-rural surroundings between Bracknell and Maidenhead and is the place of work for approximately 1,000 Syngenta scientists and support staff. Jealott’s Hill is one of our main global research and development sites and key activities include research into discovery of new active ingredients, new formulation technologies, product safety, and technical support of our product range and seeds research. Facilities include extensive chemical and bioscience research laboratories (including scale up facilities), research glasshouses, offices and support functions.
Job Description
Purpose of the role:
We are seeking an HSE Adviser, Safety Specialist to support Syngenta’s Jealotts Hill International Research Centre. In this role you will be the safety specialist for the site, supporting the Site HSE Strategy and driving the safety culture maturity towards progressive status. In addition you will provide expert safety advice to Site Management teams and staff to ensure compliance with Global Syngenta HSE Policy and Standards and all relevant national and international safety legislation and best practice. You will also be part of a Global Network of safety specialists working towards consistency in safety practices across Syngenta.
Accountabilities:
Evaluate, improve, develop and own site safety processes and procedures
Monitor and interpret legislation, Syngenta HSE Standards, CoPs and Guidance. Work with stakeholders at all levels of the organisation to ensure requirements are implemented and complied with.
Provide competent, professional, and independent science biased safety advice to management and employees.
Lead on the site emergency / incident management system providing specialised support as necessary, including the running of scenarios
Identify, develop and lead the implementation of identified safety improvement programmes
Maintain records of activities and procedures to satisfy legal and Syngenta requirements
Develop materials and deliver relevant safety training to managers and employees that equips them to deliver their line management & employee accountabilities
Liaise with Regulatory Authorities to ensure that necessary licenses/permits are gained and retained for example, Health and Safety Executive, Environment Agency, DEFRA, Home Office
Attend and pro-actively contribute to site inspections, HSE Work Groups & Site HSE Committee meetings
Invest in personal and professional development, undertaking, where appropriate, training and development activities and ensuring familiarity with new research and literature
Essential knowledge and experience:
Broad general knowledge and experience as a safety specialist operating on a complex, large campus, or equivalent environment, inclusive of the following specialisms:
Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations (DSEAR) and Process Risk Assessment (PRA)
Pressure Systems,
Contractor management and Permit to Work (PTW)
Equipment and electrical safety
Fire safety
Management of Change (MOC)
Emergency management and incident response
Workplace driving and transport
Desirable knowledge and experience:
Experience in liaising directly with Regulatory Authorities, for example, the Health and Safety Executive, Environment Agency
Relevant safety experience in a scientific Research and Development facility or equivalent
Experience with safety cultural change initiatives and challenges, with the ability to influence behavioral change at all levels of the organisation.
Experience in leading and executing projects or change programmes
Qualifications
Required education & capabilities:
Must be educated to degree level in process / chemical engineering or science-based subject (or equivalent)
Minimum of NEBOSH Certificate or equivalent Health and Safety qualification
Several years of experience in a large and diverse organisation.
Excellent understanding and implementation of current Health & Safety legislation
Ability to communicate effectively with all levels in an organisation
Strong influencing and facilitation skills
Ability to work effectively within a multi-disciplinary team
Ability to analyse data and evaluate risks
Ability to manage diversity and respond in a timely manner
