This role requires employees to complete an online Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS), including The Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) checks for criminal convictions.

The Role

 

Are you enthusiastic about taking the lead on projects related to major fusion systems, guiding them through the entire lifecycle from conceptualization to detailed design and implementation for UKAEA's facilities and future fusion devices? In this position, your responsibilities will include specifying and leading projects with intricate integrated solutions, engaging multiple disciplines, and navigating technical challenges. The role involves providing technical and project leadership for significant and large-scale projects, influencing the organization's direction and collaborating with external partners.

You will bring specialized expertise to oversee intricate engineering projects, involving the proposal, definition, and successful delivery of major projects while leading and supporting project teams. You will act as an authority in engineering management processes, coordinating teams to address critical operational issues and develop technical solutions. In this role, you will oversee a section or team, managing employee development, recruitment, and contributing to the overall direction and development of the UKAEA Project Engineering capability under the guidance of the Group Lead.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Act as the technical lead in project initiation, making critical make vs buy decisions, defining budgets, and schedules.
  • Ensure timely project delivery within specifications and agreed budgets, managing technical scope and quality.
  • Manage all project technical activities, coordinating and deploying resources effectively.
  • Advocate and facilitate the use of systems engineering principles in solution development.
  • Identify and comply with design codes, relevant legislation, and define documentation requirements.
  • Select efficient design substantiation methods, considering time, cost, and technical risk.
  • Act as the project technical authority for technical reviews, overseeing supplier documentation compliance.
  • Communicate technical expertise through reports, departmental notes, and external forums.

Qualifications

Essential Requirements:

  • A relevant engineering degree or equivalent.
  • Experience in delivering, or significantly contributing to delivery of, complex technical projects in a high-hazard environment.
  • Experience working within a highly regulated environment.
  • Ability to converse with and steer engineering analysis.
  • Experience with working to design standards and/or regulations.
  • Experience in supervising the work of others.
  • Chartered Status with relevant Engineering Institutions or equivalent experience.
